What to Include and Why It Matters

A letter of demand is often the first step in a legal process. It tells the other party what your claim is about, how much you’re owed, and by when you expect payment or action. According to legal guidelines, your letter should align with Form 4 of Annexure 1, especially if you’re using it before launching a claim in court. It must include:

• The full names and addresses of the parties;
• The nature of the claim;
• The amount owed;
• The date the amount became due;
• A deadline for response (usually 14 days).
  Sending a clear, compliant letter of demand shows the court you tried to settle the matter before escalating it.
